While I hear ya that techno has a strong foothold in the realm of the roland boxes, elektron boxes, ableton, etc. I think creative minimal techno relies heavily on interesting sound design. I think you can come up with some great interesting basses and leads with a modular as well as interesting sound effects.

This is exactly the situation i'm in. I have 2 drum machines, and several polysynths, and novation supernova capable of the same things as the bassstation.

So i feel like i'm fully covered in that area. And that's why i was looking into modular, for the modulation of my gear, as well as some more interesting, and less 'classic' sounds. In regards to which kinds of minimal i'm very into most of the things put out on Kraviz' new label: listen there, some good stuff! And thanks again for all the great replies, some very helpful comments!

Cliffemu ^ I listened to some of those videos and they are basically all drums with nothing complicated for melody. Maybe I'm just ignorant when it comes to techno. If I wanted to make that I'd buy some elektron and a kaoss pad. OskarHD cliffemu wrote: ^ I listened to some of those videos and they are basically all drums with nothing complicated for melody. No, i wouldn't say ignorant. The things is i have a lot of this type of gear, but these kind of things, sound like they sound.

And even though you can manipulate them to some degree, it will still be that machine. I like the fact, that it takes an effort to get a sound, and force myself to create new stuff, instead of manipulating presets or loading new samples and stuff like that.

The other side of the story is that i would like to have modulation for my drums, and some big lfos on pads and stuff like that. So these were my reasons for thinking modular. I'm not gonna be using it solely but as a part of a larger setup.

To add some detail, to what easily becomes 'just another techno-track' booksy I think a modular is a great thing for techno, especially if you already have a bit of gear and are looking to expand/explore. I love and use a lot of classic Roland and Elektron stuff, and the modular fits in well.it might not be a practical choice if you just want to make basic drum or bass sounds but if you're looking to explore. Techno, to me, as much as its about sound design, its also about exploring and breaking down the boundaries between rhythm, timbre, melody, and using repetition, and for that modular is great.anyway modular is no less punk than paying $3-4000 for a 909 in 2016. Opnotic minimal techno is sorta my main drive that pushes my modular excursions. I can't imagine a more perfect instrument for minimal techno than a modular system. For your set up, just be sure to get stuff that is fun righ out the gate with your set up. A maths without other modules is no fun.

Check out Surgeons setup that he used for this gig. It's really almost perfect for the size.

For myself, I find clocks and clocks to clock your clocks to be key with how I approach the sound. VCA the clocks that go to the envelopes that trigger a clock rate.etc. I would recommend the 4ms SCM before a zularic (I have both), -but they are both great. The 4ms RCD (or in your case the dopher clock module) is needed before either tho imo.

The PEG is great fun and when you get Maths, it's silly not to pick up an LXD. LPG's are minimal techno in my mind.

Probably a bit obtuse, but my post was actually a reference to a funny satire video doing the rounds at the moment. I won't post the video here so I don't derail the thread but here is the link: On topic, I think modular is great for minimal techno. Gissweden I’m soon 2 month old into modular, i.e. I do not understand why a modular couldn’t be a great techno beat machine.

I don’t really know where this modular journey will take me, but I see minimal techno as one station on the track. Go Denmark CF3 Mr. Hawtin circa late 90's around the Decks, FX, 909 era, with many many Serge panels. I understand modular seems to be all the rage currently, but people have been using modulars to make techno (minimal or otherwise) for decades. Thomas Heckmann has had a ridiculous set up forever.

You can of course process any euro sounds in your DAW, but you wont get some of those modern techno loops/sounds straight out of a modular easily.

What I like to do (probably nothing new, btw) is to record an hour, or hours of just messing around, finding some 'expensive moments' (my wife's choreographer came up with that one, I can't take credit) and then chopping the good bits out and resampling in Ableton. Maybe its a 1 bar loop, maybe its only 1 beat. Just get drunk, create a ton of raw audio, then harvest! I say that, but I'm also setting up a live techno jam-tacular at the moment.

The key there is to create those expensive moments quickly, mix them in, mix them out, repeat. I dig how Surgeon is doing it, having some actual tracks at the ready and blending them with the modular.

Gissweden We – modular beginners – don’t want to see modular castles Give us examples on nice beats made with a little less than 100000 modules.
