Resurfacing Contract Authorized For Mac
BERKLEY — The Oakland County Board of Commissioners awarded the city of Berkley $15,000 for its project to complete the resurfacing of Coolidge Highway. The Berkley City Council authorized the agreement at its Sept. The total project costs for the Coolidge construction are expected to total $250,000, while the construction itself is to cost around $200,000 when the bids go out. The project costs include $34,000 from a contract with engineering firm Hubbell, Roth & Clark Inc. To design the project. “As of this year, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners are recognizing the ties between local road improvements and economic development,” City Manager Matthew Baumgarten said.

“What they did was they created a pilot project and allowed different municipalities to apply to this program with any road improvement programs they have that’s essentially shovel-ready or has an issue with funding in order to realize them.” Cities that apply for the program must be able to match whatever amount the county agrees to award them to spend on their own for the construction, Baumgarten said. The commissioners awarded Berkley the maximum amount possible, $15,431. “Not quite a 50 percent match I will admit, but certainly it was the full extent of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners’ ability to award monies to Berkley,” he said. “We’re greatly appreciative of every dollar and cent that comes from both the county and the state, and we’re excited to enter into this agreement.” Department of Public Works Director Derrick Schueller said the money awarded to a city is based on how large the project is expected to be. The Coolidge Highway resurfacing stretches from 11 Mile to 12 Mile roads, where some long-line intersection work will be redone. “Other communities, the amount was different,” he said.

“My understanding is the amount of grant funds was a function of the miles of street that you have. “Depending on lane miles, communities had a certain amount of grant money that was available,” he said. Though the amount given to the city is minor compared to the overall cost of the project, Schueller is happy they can get any money to offset the costs. “We obviously hadn’t bid out this job yet,” he said. “We’re in the design phase right now.
You never know how bids are going to come in, either. So this is even a little bit of added protection with respect to that not knowing. “We’re taking an estimate on where we think bids are going to come in, but knowing we have this grant does give us even a little more flexibility when it comes time to open bids, depending on how the prices come in,” he said. “So I think that’s a big advantage as well.”.
